The White Stuff

Well I wouldn't expect anything different for the 1st of December. We had a day in November that dropped a little snow, but the ground was too warm for it to stay, this dusting stayed for a couple of days, it may look nice but today with plus 5 degrees, it's just messy now.

 

 

 

 

Rafters & Joists

The rafters and joists showed up today, along with a little snow, about an inch. The work on the second floor will have to hold off for a couple of days, we have a weather front moving in with plenty of rain and wind. The last thing we want is to pull the roof off with this coming, we can manage with a bit of cold weather, just and heaters and all is well.

Engineered joists, you have to love it.

Kitchen Work

I started some work in the kitchen, an area that would have been waisted is now a built in shelving unit. It's not very wide, but is 11 inches deep and 89 inches high. I just made a stand and header and a box that the future cabinet for shelves fits into.

It's Starting

Over the past week and a half we have had a couple of things being dropped off to start with our second floor addition. Our contractor dropped off the scaffolding and the other day lumber came, so it looks like thing will be moving along soon. We are still waiting for the floor joists and rafters to be delivered. Once everything is on ground the work begins. I'll be sure to post pictures of the progress.

The Finishing Touches

The finishing touches were done to the cold room today, the door knob, bottom door sweep and door stops does it for this job. It just makes it look completed even thought it's just plywood, were ready for next years harvest.

A Cold Room

You would think that after all the research, calls, estimates, time, labour and the expense of putting in a new, very efficient heating system we would actually want to make one room cold. Well we did, in our basement on an outside wall, a great place to store our harvest, when we have a harvest next year. It is just over 7 feet long and 6 feet wide and a little over 6 feet high. The walls and ceiling are insulated and I remembered to put the vapor barrier on the warm side like you would when you insulate your walls. I still have to get a door knob and one of those weather covers for the bottom of the door. There is a plug in there near the window so we can get cool air in or humid air out. It should work well.

Just About Done

I'm talking about our heating system, we got the outside unit and return air installed yesterday, and it works great. With the return air lines in we can feel the difference in the flow, and the upstairs temperature. The house isn't over pressurized so the draw helps the flow throughout. Once the second floor over the old addition is up we'll get a line run to it, it's ready in the attic to be ducted over. The return line is large and the vent cover is a bit as well, not too many places to cut into an older home without putting it in the floor, this was not an option.

Even on the frostiest mornings our guests keep coming back, as we are a no hunting zone for them, they must feel safe here.

The same three every day, I think.

They don't worry about us anymore.

This Is What 18.6 Cu Ft Looks Like?

We picked up three of our new kitchen appliances yesterday, the fridge, freezer and dishwasher. The dishwasher will be installed later when the cupboards are done. The fridge and freezer are both Frigidaire Professional series and are both 18.6 cu ft, this is a lot of room. They are taller than most, as wide but are not as deep so they fit nicely into their new homes. They are obviously more efficient than our older ones and with a stand up freezer we can see everything in it with out wondering what is in the bottom, or what we forgot is down there. This is the start to putting the kitchen back together.

The Kitchen and Bath

The last two rooms have the new blinds up, and like the others, they make a difference to the look, and for the better. With the one in the kitchen north window up it will help this winter. We did picked up one for the bathroom the same time we got the others but it was a mini blind and was a ½ inch too narrow, so it got returned yesterday and we picked up these to complete the job.
