More Progress

The weather is still not co-operating, the crew came out yesterday and finished off the veranda soffets and along the north (back) side. It rained hard later in the afternoon and the wind came up. Today it's not bad just -13°C but with the wind it's down to -25, not nice. I added a picture of the built-ins and oven cabinet, in the dry fit stage. The built-ins are painted and I have poly inside the cabinets, next the paint for the face and drawers to be built and installed. After that I should be able to get them in.

Every bit helps.

Just like it should have been there all along.

Looks good.

A glimpse of what is coming.

A Dry Fitting

After a couple of days in the shop I emerged with the cupboards for the built-in oven/microwave, and bottom drawer. I'll build an upper cupboard once I get this finalised. The base, bottom drawers and oven cabinet are made from ¾ inch birch plywood, good both sides, with a 5 layer core, very strong and stable. I have to move the plug down a bit to accommodate installation of the oven and cut an opening for the microwave plug. There is a bit of painting to do, along with making sides that will work with my designer to tie into the built-in on either side of the oven. Challenging but it will work.

The Bump Out

The design called for a bump out just as you would walk into the room, this extended the roof line out a bit and would give us head room for the doorway and provide space for insulation. It is a 3 ft x 3 ft area about 6ft 6inch high and will have a window on both sides. I guess I'll have to make a high platform for some of our little ones to enjoy the sun shine and the view.

Not a very big space but it will be bright.

Not a lot of head room either.

A look out our new windows.

Another Cold Day

Today it was a one man job day, at least that is what Ben was told when he showed up today alone. He put in a brace above the top part of the veranda rafter that was secured to the wall studs, and then he doubled up the stud for more support, so it will hold up a bit of snow. This roof will be cleaned off quickly anyway with my roof rake because I don't want the snow up around the windows. As well today he added insulation to the underside of our little bump put to keep it from becoming a cold spot and started with the soffets under the new veranda, for this part help came out. Over all a good day.

You can see the rafters are supported on a sill beam.

The rafters are secured to the studs.

Studs doubled up and braces added.

Well insulated and sealed.

Looks better already.

A Small Design Change

This morning started out nice and then some blowing light snow started to fall, just after they got most of the shingles on the veranda roof. Then they started on the back (north) side of the addition, putting up a little extension to brake up the long look of the wall. It was originally to be a 12 - 12 pitch on it to match the roof of main house but even if it was a 10 -12 pitch to match up with this new one it didn't look right, and luckily this happened just as the men were putting up the boards, I decided to get out and snap a few pics, only to ask the to stop work until we get it right. They did have concerns about it and thought it was what we wanted because it was in the plans they had and honestly they don't want to question every design detail they think isn't right, and so they started. After it was looked at ReBecca and I wanted the line to match the veranda roof line as it will tie into the a small one foot roof that will go over the windows and door on the east side. As you can see it does look much better. I was told that it was harder taking down the two boards then putting up the revised line. Their work is solid.

The shingles are on.

It doesn't look right.

See the difference with the new line.

Much better, the deer will be happy.

Kitchen Built-In's

With heat back on in the shop I have been able to start the built-ins by the oven. They still have to be painted but here is a look at what we are doing. The wall oven and microwave will fit nicely.

It will be great when it's done.

Lots of room.

It all fits together very well, it's nice she has vision.

A Sneek Peak

The east side.

A New Look

The cantilever veranda roof is up, and does it ever make a big impact on the look of the place, it looks great. They worked on this today along with a short wall inside on the north end to receive a small roof line on the north end. This will break up the long wall and tie the two sides together, you'll see as it progresses.

Taking shape, again.

A little bit more sheathing and fascia board.

Now for shingles, fascia and soffets, and etc....

More Windows

Three more windows were installed today, along with the soffets on the north side. It's a bit higher up and the scaffolding needed a little adjusting, just to make it safer.

Window installation.

Adding a little light to the room.
A hard place to get at.

Another Good Day

After another day of rain, the men returned and started to close in the west side, and even managed to get two windows in, it's looking good. They have to leave the middle one out for now so they can get inside, they won't cut through right away, there is still a little work to do inside, an interior wall by the main house and a couple of short runs up the roof line to close off the space.

A little more work on this side with the extra roof line.

The windows look great.

Still Making Progress

After a week of heavy rain and winds the crew, at least two of them, came back and started on the soffets and flashing, along with an insulating board for the outside. This is a more dense foam board much better than the original Styrofoam board on the lower half of this addition. We will be adding insulation inside, for those who have been following this blog, you understand why I said this.

It does take a while to add soffets with all the extra peeks.

Starting to shape up.

Shingles Are On

It has been a slow start to 2014 and our second floor addition, mostly because of the weather. It has been bitter cold out there and you don't want to start working when everything is frozen and will break if used. Today was a good day, work wise, they got the east side singles done, a little work needed around the vent pipe to better seal it. As for the weather we may be above zero today but it's raining hard and these Gents just worked through it.

The top is water proof, now for the rest.
