The Last Day

This is the last day of the year and work is still being done. The roofers got the west side done and started on the east side. The gables and vent pipe are done and some time next year they'll be back to finish it off. Not bad for standing on a roof at -29°C, slow going.

Looks good.

Almost there.

A White Christmas And Then Some

Well the snow has come and continued to do so over the past few weeks. We haven't had this amount of snow fall this early in the season in a long time. The banks are the size they should be at the end of February, not the end of December. It's Canada in the winter so what do I expect. The crew was here yesterday to clean off the roof to and the roofers came to continue the shingles, and they are here today. The sun may be shining but with a -22°C temp before the wind chill it makes for a slow go.

More snow now than in Feb this year.

It does look good.

Last amount was 12 inches.

Our contractor with a plow helped out, got is crew in working.

Work continues, the gables take time.

Moving right along today.

A Water Tight Valley

The roofers came today and tied into the old roof line and made the valleys water tight. It took a while to carefully pull up and remove some of the old shingle, especially in the temperature. They put down a heavy duty rubber membrane in the valley and put on enough shingles to cover everything. As well all the drip edges were installed, normally a quick job on a straight roof line, but we have 3 dormer on each side so a little more effort was required. They'll be back Monday to finish it off, I hope.

Our contractor install the sewer vent pipe ready for shingles.

A lot of prep work.

New drip edge and prep work.

Laying the shingles.

Finishing up this side.

Breaking Up The Line

With the addition of these dormers we are breaking up the roof line, adding a little style to the project. They look good and as you can see we are getting six new windows, lots of light.

A Snow Day

Today is our first significant snow fall and the new roof is holding out. I can now see were snow will accumulate, not that there was much doubt. Hopefully not much blows in under the open soffets or the opening by the bump out. I guess after I do the driveway tomorrow morning I'll have to shovel the inside??? We'll see.

A little build up.

More build up because of the planks.

And yes we have a building permit.

Ready For Snow

They put in a short day today, 6 hours, but with it being -33° C with the wind this morning it didn't matter how long they were here, it was brutally cold, these men were great. They tied in the roof line to the house, sheathing was added, ice and water shield put on and an new roof paper that I'm told is better than tar paper, called "Cool Grey". We'll see how it works as we are expecting snow tomorrow. It took a while to get everything done, just adding staging in this cold was rough. They then had to put up roof jacks and huge planks to walk on to cover the roof. More to follow on Monday.

Tying in the roof line and adding ice & water shield.

One more sheet of sheathing on this side to go.

Ice and water shield.

A new product, "Cool Grey", better than tar paper.

Almost done the sheathing.

The roof is water tight.

Looks great.

It will look better with the windows in.

It's Taking Shape

The rafter went up today along with some of the sheathing, and seeing it was a very bitter cold day these men did a great job and came a long way. They should have the roof finished tomorrow and covered up some what, as we have or first major show event on Sunday. Not a problem, snow can be swept away, with rain we would have to wait until it dries to finish the job.

As promised the last wall up, late yesterday.

A skilled man with a chainsaw, making room for a wall.

Leave an opening to get the rafters up. Excellent.

One of the walls for our bump out.

A couple of rafters are up.

Making progress.

Starting to look like something now.

A nice roof line, this is big.

Sheathing goes on.

More sheathing.

Looking into the room.

Looking back to the house. The doorway will be on the right.

Moving Right Along

Today was a good day, even if it was -25º C with the wind chill. The rest of the floor sheathing got laid, and they put up three walls. I only have pictures if the first two, I'll get the third one tomorrow morning, in the light. It's hard to see anything but a box on top of another box, but when the roof goes up and the gables over the windows are built and other features you'll see as it progresses, it will be great.

The floors down and lumber made ready for walls.

Starting to shape up.

Building the walls.

Insulation at the end of the floor joists, keep it warm.

The first wall is up.

Nice big windows to be added.

Second wall is up.

It almost looks like a building now.

Add A Little Propane

The shop heating system is done, the propane tank was installed today and all is good. It is nice to have it warm to be able to work. No excuses now, maybe one, I still need some room to work and I'll have it soon as they are progressing on the second floor addition nicely.

He'll have to wait until it warms up a bit to paint the pipes.

There's No Turning Back Now

Well we are committed now, as you can see they showed up today and got a lot done. Once the roof was cleaned off they got at the shingles and then the sheathing came off. I am keeping most of it along with the old rafter they cut off. They had to make a game plan to move forward including getting the height of the new floor to match the house. The thing is the addition ceiling is 8 feet the original ceiling in the house is 8½ feet so a little adjusting to make it line up took some time and well worth it. With the roof down the construction part won't take long, I'm told. There should be about two more days of work left. I hope.

Clean off the snow, less mess.

Carefully dismantling it.

Getting the joists ready.

There was lots of blown in insulation up there.

Floor joists in place.

One last piece to come down, the end gable.

Cover it up for the night.

A future roof just lying there.
