The First Half

There are so many pieces of trim work that I can't prime and paint them all at the same time, even my shop has limits. I did most of the larger pieces of trim in this first batch. Yesterday I applied two coats of primer and today I rolled on two coats of trim paint, a bright semi-gloss white. They'll get a couple more coats of trim paint after they are installed. You may not be able to see the difference but here are a couple of pictures from the last two days.

Things Are Taking Shape

It wasn't a bad week, while I was waiting for the wood to acclimatize to the heat again I did some wood turning for ReBecca. I make some laying tools and nostepindes, along with square knitting needles. You can see that work on my WP Wood working blog at http://wpwoodworking.blogspot.ca/. I also had to repair the lathe, my live centre broke and I had to put in another bearings.

Now for the trim work. I cut the boards to rough length and then to width, which is 4 inches for the main part of the trim. I then cut the outer part of the trim work to width and then ran it through the router twice to round over the ends. Then back to the table saw for two more passes to cut out a rabbit to fit over the main trim. Today I sanded all the trim work. 100 pieces in total. I used a stationary belt/disk sander, which I fitted with a crude dust collection line. It work very well, keeping the pine dust down.

We're Still Here

It has been a little slow lately, the weather being a little cold and the blizzard does put a damper on things. I picked up the wood yesterday for the trim work for the windows. I picked up 240 feet of 1 x 6 pine, which will be cut to 4 inches and the cut offs will be used to make up the outside edge of the trim. Once they are cut, prified and sanded, I'll prime and paint them, then out to the house we go. I have to let them warm up in the shop a few days, as they are stored outside and I don't want to cut into frozen wood.

This is my work load, 22 10 footers, and 5 8 footers.

Working With The Weather - A Snow Day

As most of us already know we had a bit of snow, actually it was called a blizzard, so work on the house has slowed down some what. I spent one day waiting for the snow to stop, cleaning the driveway in town and then the next day doing both places. The next thing will be to get the wood to start the window trim. I'll be waiting a few days to pick it up as it is calling for rain, and I have to use the trailer because most of it will be 10 feet long to maximize the best results out each board, without waiting too much. Not even a snow day as I wasn't very busy. I'll save this day for golfing season.

A nice bright day, a bit windy. Another postcard picture.

This is the start of one end of the driveway. It goes as far to
the house from the garage and beyond as much again.

Cleaning Up

A little sanding and cutting away excess foam from around the windows was on the to do list for today. Yesterday was a day in the city for us, a little shopping and lunch, as it was -20°C in the morning. Not much to show for today's efforts, all the pictures of the windows are starting to look the same So I thought I'd put up a new picture of our pond with a little snow coverage. Tomorrow there may be about another 10 -20 cm of snow on, we are expecting a bit of a "Blizzard", they say?

This is a seasonal pond, fall and spring time. We are looking
at making more permanent later on.

Fill And Foam

I don't want to do everything all at once, so today I filled the nail holes with wood fill, and spray foamed around the frames to assist in keeping everything air tight, at least the best I can with existing structure. I had to brighten up these pictures a bit and they may look like others I've posted, but trust me they are from today. As you can see some of the foam oozing out and you may see some dark areas around the frames where I added fill. As well I thought a few would work, you don't need to see every one of them.

Once Again The Frame Work Is Up

It didn't take too long to install the frames for the windows, even though there were 12 to do. All the work I did prior paid off. I just set them in, check for square, see how they fit the window, add a few shims and nailed them in. I'll see about screws later, but once I get the face trim on I doubt I'll need them. They are not going to carry any load like the door frames. They may be hard to see in these pictures and I had to bright up a few to help. Here they are, trust me they're there.

Assembled And Delivered

This morning I assembled the frames with screws, of course I had to pre-drill the holes as I was putting them close to the end of the side boards and into the end grain of the top and bottom boards. I did use the nailer to secure the a middle strapping, temporarily to keep the width the same to assist with installation tomorrow. I set the kitchen north window frame in just to see how it went, it fits into slots around the window and it fit great.

Delivered and awaiting installation.

A Little Brighter

The frame work is a little brighter today, I rolled on two coats of semi-gloss white paint, and they look good. Tomorrow will be assembly day and I'll get them to out to the house. They should be in this week if all goes well, and I don't run into any snags.

I may be hard to see but they are brighter then yesterday.

Sand And Prime And Prime

That was today's job, I got the frames sanded and two coats of primer on, tomorrow I'll start with the semi-gloss paint, then assembly and instillation. The windows in the house felt air tight at least when the trim was inside the old frames. But remove the trim and you notice the little things like when an 80 Km/h wind comes up from the west, it blows very well into the room. So out came all the old insulation that was stuffed around the windows and in with the spray foam, it's all nice and tight and sealed, ready for the new trim. I had done the down stairs windows this summer, this job took me about 2 hours to pull the insulation out, I used an dentist pick type tool to reach in and pull it out.

A look at 12 window frames primed ready for finished paint.
