Making A Mess Of Things

That pretty well sums up what the doors look like now. After applying some, OK a bit more than some, carpenters wood fill, to clean up the nail holes and some imperfections, they look a bit rough. After tomorrow, when I sand them down and apply a coat of paint to see how they'll look and if I need to touch up anything, they should look a bit better. Here is what they look like after today's work was done, I don't think you need to see every door or both sides, this give you an idea of what they all look like.

Spring Visitors

Now the snow is melting the wild life is coming out of the woods, literally. When I got to the house there were a few visitors at the tree line. I tried to zoom in and it's hard to see but there are 6 of them keeping close to the trees.

The Door Trim - Round Two

Today was another good day, and I got the second part of the door trim up. It is amazing what a little piece of wood will do to improve the look of this trim. There is more work to do, hiding the nail holes and some flaws, that will be next weeks work load. Here is what come of today's efforts.

Working The Doors

Today it was all about getting the 4 inch trim pieces up and it went well. That makes 20 doors (one side) with the first part of the trim up, and even though there is more to do and they need to be filled, sanded and painted again, they look great. Here are a few pictures of today's work.

49 Pine Boards = 98 Pieces Of Trim

That about sums it up, 98 pieces of trim, this number isn't all I have to install, there are already 14 others left over from the windows that I need to finish the doors. The real count is about 112 pieces that await me this week. I was able to get the second coat of primer on yesterday and this morning the two coats of trim paint got applied. This afternoon I delivered them to the house ready to be installed. When I start you'll see how many I have to do.

Here the are waiting to be cut and nailed up.

Almost Ready

Between yesterday and today I put on two coats of primer and two coats of trim paint on 28 of the 49 remaining door trim boards. And I applied one coat of primer to the remaining 21 boards, if they dry soon, I'll even get the second coat on. Leaving tomorrow for the trim paint and then a rest day.

because the sun came out this afternoon.

Getting A Little Brighter

The second coat of primer went on this morning and this afternoon, two coats of bright white trim paint went on. In between coats I shoveled our 20 cm of spring snow we got last night. I took this picture from a different angel so you don't think I just use the same one.

One part is done, next the main piece. That will take a couple of days

This what we woke up to. The first day of spring???

Sand And Prime And Repeat

That was today's tune. I sanded all the boards and this afternoon I put on the first coat of primer on the small trim piece. Every time I do this I come up with a better way to do it. So they look nice and to avoid brush strokes I got small rollers that work great for the small trim. I already have a 4 inch one to do the large trim, the one I use to apply the paint on the window trim. It goes on very well and a bit quicker as well. Really not much to show for today's efforts, so I thought I would show you my sanding set up. I built a down draft table for sanding a while a go and it works very well attached to my big dust collector. I have the sander attached to a shop vac and the overhead air filter is running. This keeps the dust down, a bit, and it's easier on the lungs.

Slice And Dice The Door Trim

A more accurate description of today's work would be 'rip and route' because I ripped the main boards for the door trim to width, routed the edges and cut out the rabbet for the profiled piece. It may not sound like much but there are 49 boards that I ripped the edge trim off, then I ripped the boards to width. Set up the router for the round overs which required two passes. Back to the table saw to cut out the rabbet, again two different set ups to complete it. Making sure I used feather boards to keep the boards snug to the saw blade for a more accurate cut and keeping my fingers clear as well. Tomorrow I'll sand them and should be able to get a primer coat on some of them.

Finally cutting a rabbet in them to fit over the main trim.

Now For The Doors

After a bit of sanding I put another coat on the windows, then I touched up the look on the sides, just by applying a bit of wall paint. I think they are done, that is for now, once we move in and they warm up a bit, and along with that come some wood movement that will need attending. Today I picked up my next work load, several 1"x 6"x 8', actually 49 of them, I already have a few left over from the window job, so it's not that bad. Ha.

A Rainy Day

After the windows set for a few days I got a good look at them and decided they needed another little touch up. Some of the trim still didn't fit just right with the frame work so I applied a little more fill. Tomorrow I'll sand them down and put on another coat of paint. To see what I did just go back a few posts and the pictures would be the same, that is if I took any today. What I did do was take a picture of our pond, with all the rain it is growing a bit, unfortunately we don't think it will stay, at least not without digging it out. One step at a time, sell the house in town first and then the pond.

It will be great, some day soon.

Looking Good

Here is what the windows look like after one coat of paint. As I mentioned earlier there is a bit more work to do, but they do look good.
